Now Recommends Daily BI monitoring

According to “Annual amendments to ANSI/AAMI ST79: 2006/A2008,
Comprehensive guide to steam sterilization and sterility assurance in health care facilities (Continuous Maintenance)” by AAMI (American Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation), monitoring through biological Indicator test has been recommended implementing daily to healthcare facilities. Previously, it had been recommended “weekly, preferably daily” before amended to “daily”
AAMI, a nonprofit organization founded in 1967, is an organization which promotes knowledge and use of medical instrumentation. It creates standards, educates and certifies technicians, and publishes technical documents, books, periodicals, and software.
Although AAMI is a voluntary organization, its Recommended Practices and Standards are considered to be major resource of health care guidelines, and noncompliance with these standards is cited by regulatory organizations that inspect health care facilities. Hence, the recommendation is anticipated to bring an effect for the sterilization industry before long.
The sterilization procedure should be monitored routinely by using a combination of mechanical, chemical, and biological indicators to evaluate the sterilizing conditions and indirectly the microbiologic status of the processed items.
Biological indicators are recognized by most authorities as being closest to the ideal monitors of the sterilization process because they measure the sterilization process directly by using the most resistant microorganism (Bacillus spores).
Geobacillus stearothermophilus spores are used to monitor (2.00 X 106 cfu) for HMTS series. If a sterilizer is used frequently, daily use of biological indicators allows earlier discovery of equipment malfunctions or procedural errors and thus minimizes the extent of patient surveillance and product recall needed in the event of a positive biological indicator. Each load should be monitored if it contains implantable objects.
Awareness of infection control, increasing operation count, improving healthcare service/technologies etc. brought such amendment for the BI test. It is expected that the recommendation of BI test delivers positive effect on the medical equipment industry. Because, “daily BI test” bring along to use more Biological Indicator. Furthermore, it brings better health care service for the patient and better sale for the manufacturer, distributor, and health care facility.
Namely, end-user must know the article that “BI test is recommended once in a day” to improve healthcare service. Through the promotion of the implement daily BI test, benefit will be delivered not only for the patient but also the manufacturer, distributor, and health care facility.
